The Processional Arts Workshop (PAW) was formed to preserve, promote and develop public processions and puppets of historical reconstruction as a distinct and vital art. Armed with diverse and global traditions of vernacular street theater, large-scale puppetry and ritual spectacle, we seek to use processional art as a means of building and maintaining the spirit and conscience of the community. PAW creates original works for established public events and festivals (notably to lead the New York Village Halloween parade each year), as well as to sow site-specific competition traditions in communities where no event is held. this type could not have existed before. Drawing on regional cultures, history, folklore, ethnicity and current socio-political concerns, our performances encourage local residents to participate in each stage of production. thus enabling them to identify, express and preserve the narratives that uniquely define "local" in their own community, against the current wave of global homogenization.
